Are Alienware the next MacBook?

After years of domination of the MacBook in the laptop aesthetics aspect, we are finally seeing professional looking Windows laptops in the market. The XPS series from Dell for example is one of the pioneers.
Previously, powerful Windows laptops are mostly tagged as “gaming”. Often enough, the tag also include “gaming” aesthetics and accessories.
Gaming” keyboard, “gaming” color accent, “gaming” logo, all very appealing to the “gaming” b2b lead generation. However, all those lead to the missing out of professional individuals who need a powerful laptop to run their intensive software on the go. And professionals all went for the minimalistic MacBook in the end.
Thankfully, the Windows laptop manufacturers finally understand the trend in the market. And they began to produce less “gamer” looking devices.
One of such that blended “gaming” aesthetic well with a professional look is Alienware laptops. In the same time, Dell also used premium material in the Alienware series.
The latest Alienware m15, in fact, look stunning when compared to other laptops in the same price. The rear LED around the heat exhaust is just a stunner during a “professional” business meeting.
Instead of the over-the-top RGB lighting, the Alienware m15 minimized the use of RGB only on the logo behind the screen and the keyboard. Combined with the aluminumcasing, the laptop felt premium like the MacBook.
As expected in the “gaming” line up, the Alienware m15 packs serious hardware. The highest spec m15 has an Intel i9 9980HK 8-core processor and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q with 8GB of GDDR6.
Other than gliding through all the recent triple-A games, it meant you can run intensive software, like Adobe Premier Pro, After Effects and Blender, wherever you go.
For the increasingly popular occupation of content creator, you can trust the 15.6” 4K OLED screen that supports the DCI-P3 color space. And the keyboard on the m15 continues the excellence from previous Alienware laptops with great typing feel.
All these aspects make the Alienware m15 a very competitive product against MacBook, if not more. The new MacBook is known to overheat and to have a horrible typing experience. The Alienware m15 easily surpasses all the negative issues.
But!
Dell has made a horrible decision with the Alienware m15 that we do not want to see. The recent MacBook are known to have their memory and SSD soldered to the motherboard, making after-sales upgrade impossible.
While Windows laptops can proudly assault MacBook on this aspect previously, dear dell, why did you follow the same footsteps of Apple?
The soldered memory on the latest Alienware m15 made upgrade of memory impossible on the Alienware m15.
What’s more annoying is the fact that Dell charged more than the market price to upgrade the memory in the Alienware m15.
While it does not make the Alienware m15 fall away from the competition, this is a serious disadvantage to the m15, considering how many users would consider upgrading their laptop over time.
Despite all that, I believe the Alienware m15 is a serious contender to the now 16-inch MacBook Pro. And the m15 is not as unaffordable as the Razer Blade 15 and has better performance. Considering the power of the hardware and software optimization on Windows, getting the Alienware m15 is quite a good choice.
