Before applying any stain remover use a lightly damp rag or cloth and blot the stain working from the outside in. Scrubbing the stain would further push it into the fiber, blotting will help to lift the stain out.

Make sure to keep a dry rag nearby if you have to reapply the solution to the stain. Keep dabbing the region with the dry cloth to prevent the carpet from soaking it.
Gently damp the rag in distilled water and dab over the cleaned region to remove any remnants of the stain remover. Mix 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to your water if the stain is very tough to remove. Quickly vacuum the area to straighten the carpet back up and to remove any remnants residing deep within the fibers.
