Discreet Pest Control Northampton for Ant Infestations
Having an ant problem may seem like a minor annoyance, and although ants are not thought to carry any serious diseases, they can still walk far and wide on their mission to forage for food and water.
You never know where they may have been or what they have crawled through before invading your home. The last thing you want is for them to crawl all over your food in your kitchen cupboards, tables and worktops.
In the UK the most common type of ant is the Common black ant (Lasius niger). While they mostly nest outdoors in grass, they will next under paving stones and behind walls.
Black ants are attracted to your home because they are looking for food and water, or a place to shelter. When people discover they have an ant problem it will usually be in the kitchen where you keep your food.
Discouraging ants
Ants are attracted to a wide variety of food scents, including meat and vegetables, but especially sweet things like fruit and high-sugar foods and this is why they are so commonly discovered in kitchens rather than in other rooms such as bedrooms.
They forage far and wide for food quite a distance from their nest so when they need to rest they will retreat into cracks and gaps in the walls and roof of your house. They will often stick around for a while foraging for food and water before eventually returning to the nest.
Foraging ants can cause a great nuisance, especially as they will follow set trails laid down by other ants and will cluster around an open food source. This is why you may find many ants feasting on an open packet of food, especially sweet foods like bags of sugar.
If you have any open packets of food in your kitchen cupboard, you can keep your food safe from ants by keeping it sealed in jars, tins or plastic tubs. Ants will also come indoors in search of water, so if you have a particularly dry summer with little rainfall, they will be drawn indoors in search of water.
It can help to have a source of water in your garden for ants, birds and other local wildlife to drink from, so a garden pond, birdbath or a water feature is a great way to prevent ants from entering your home to look for water.
