HVAC filter is an important component of an HVAC system. It is used in furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, etc. HVAC filters are made of a fiberglass material or from pleated paper enclosed in a frame. This apparently minor component is very critical for the heating and cooling systems of any place. It cleans the air that circulates through the system by trapping dust particles and other contaminants.

HVAC filters prevent bacterias, particulate matter, etc. from mixing with the indoor air hence giving clean air which is crucial for our good health and comfort. It is considered one of the most important components of the HVAC system and is yet overlooked.

It is very important to keep the HVAC filter clean for its proper functioning. Dirty and clogged HVAC filters can hamper the functioning of your air conditioner or heater. It will not clean the air properly and will allow the contaminants back in the indoor air. Besides, a dirty HVAC filter will cause the other equipment to work harder, increasing energy consumption and hence your electricity bill.

Steps to change HVAC filter

  1. Locate: First you need to find where the HVAC filter is located. In some equipment, the return air duct is near the bottom of your HVAC unit, while in other intake air enters from the top of the unit.
  2. Open: Some systems have a slide tray positioned above or below the furnace. Open the tray and slide out the filter.
  3. Examine: Hold the HVAC filter in front of a light source and see if the light can pass through it. If the filter is blocking the light, this means it is clogged and needs to be replaced.
  4. Buy a Replacement Filter: Measure the size of the frame and check what HVAC filter size will fit the frame. A simple fiberglass filter and a pleated filter are the two most common types of HVAC filters. The fiberglass filter is the most inexpensive and is commonly used in homes. On the other hand, the polyester or pleated HVAC filter is a little expensive.
  5. Replace the HVAC filter: Once you have chosen the HVAC filter, insert it in the ventilation system. Here is a tip for you. Add the date of replacement on the frame of the filter, so that you know when the next replacement is needed. Make sure you install the HVAC filter in the right direction. Follow the arrows.
  6. Close the tray/gate: After installing the HVAC filter close the tray and you are done. Your filter has been replaced.

These were the steps to change the HVAC filter. It is important to replace the filter from time to time for its proper functioning.
