The Golden State Warriors powered to a big lead Saturday, but had to battle late to hold off the New Orleans Pelicans 106-99 in the first game of the NBA Western Conference playoffs. Stephen Curry scored 34 points and the Warriors looked like living up to their status as the top team in the regular-season with a blowout. New Orleans put together a 14-0 scoring run bridging the third and fourth quarters, trimming a 25-point deficit to 11. Curry and Klay Thompson responded for Golden State, draining back-to-back three-pointers to launch a 7-0 run for the hosts.

By Larry Fine FAR HILLS, New Jersey (Reuters) – Gil Hanse designed the course that will stage the return of golf to the Olympics in 2016 for the first time in 112 years and knows the stakes are high for the sport. “I hate figure skating. “So people who have never watched golf, because it’s an Olympic sport will tune in. “If in any small way we can present the face of what we believe golf should look like — not perfect, a little bit rugged, a little bit rustic — hopefully this will bring a boom in golf development around the world.” After long delays in construction over issues including environmental concerns, Hanse said the struggles are over and only the last touches remain on the as yet unnamed course.

(Reuters) – Unheralded American Troy Merritt moved one step closer to his maiden PGA Tour title by claiming a three-stroke lead after Saturday's third round of the RBC Heritage in South Carolina. Merritt, ranked 249th in the world and making his 86th tour start, followed his course record-tying 61 in the second round with a 69 for a 54-hole total of 14-under-par 199 on the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island. It was pretty stress free for the most part." Tied for second on 11 under par were defending champion Matt Kuchar, who shot a 68, and fellow Americans Brendon Todd (63) and Kevin Kisner (67). "I hit a beautiful shot in but it caught a limb and it ended up costing me a double bogey." One more shot back were 2010 winner Jim Furyk (68), Brice Garnett (65) and Branden Grace of South Africa (66).

(Reuters) – Kiradech Aphibarnrat dropped three shots in his last two holes but will still take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Shenzhen International as the Thai bids for his second European Tour title. The 2013 Malaysian Open champion double bogeyed the par-five hole and dropped another shot at the last to sit 12-under after his round of 68. Then I made a big mistake on last two holes, not the way to finish." Halfway leader Peter Uihlein lurked two shots behind after birdying the penultimate hole for the third time this week to return one-under-par 71. Four bogeys, a bit rough, five birdies and missed a couple pretty easy ones," rued Uihlein, who has not won in European Tour since his maiden triumph at the 2013 Madeira Islands Open.
